"There will always be speculation as to the ancestry of the Cavalier. They may have originated in Spain, Italy, Holland or France, and these early little spaniels were know as Toy Spaniels.
One of the earliest mentions of the Tricolour is a 'Lost' advertisement in the 'London Gazette' by Prince Rupert, October 1667.
Prince Charles was the original name given to the Tricolour.
The breed was shown in the same classes as the King Charles Spaniel until 1945 when separate registration was granted by The Kennel Club."
