"The British gave the Dalmatian its nickname of 'Carriage Dog' because it was used to trot alongside horsedrawn carriages in the nineteenth century. Reputedly to protect passengers from highwaymen, but probably used for its decorative effect.
Many countries claim to be its birthplace; some say it originated in India and reached Europe by travelling with gypsies in the middle ages. One thing is clear, its name comes from the Dalmatia region of former west Yugoslavia. Frescoes and paintings in Egypt and Greece show dogs similar in appearance to the Dalmatian.
A very boisterous and intelligent dog, todays Dalmatian is a great favourite with children, possibly due to Walt Disney's animated cartoon '101 Dalmatians'."
